“I have seen servants on horses, with princes walking as servants on earth.” So wrote the disillusioned “I’ve seen it all” King Solomon in his later years (Ecclesiastes 10:7). There’s plenty of disillusionment nowadays in regard to those who are seen as ‘riding high’ undeservedly, in the fields of politics and religion, while those who are more able and gifted are walking, their natural talents and God-given abilities either ignored or unwanted.
The Lord Jesus rode into Jerusalem on a donkey to reveal himself as the long-prophesied Messiah. Everywhere else in the Gospels, Jesus walked. The symbol of his return in the book of Revelation is that of Heaven’s Conqueror, riding a white horse at the head of his armies. A rider, no longer a walker!
In the age that is to come, many who once rode high will walk low, their once-exalted status given over to those who, despite their spiritual gifts and their godly personal lifestyle, had walked despite being more worthy.
Jesus is the Saviour of the world, and the Lord of all who entrust him with their lives in this age, and with their future in the age that is to come. So, walk as long and as far as your Lord Jesus desires because humility is good for the soul. Knowing, however, that your time to ride will come — sooner, perhaps, than those who are now riding high undeservedly might think.
