When Things Come to a Standstill

In this fast moving world we need to know those verses from the Bible that can bring us to a standstill. Verses such as: “Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” (Psalm 46:10)

“Stand still and see the salvation of the LORD” is normally good advice, but when Moses said this to the children of Israel, God questioned him as to why, since it was not a time to pray but to “Move forward”! (Exodus 14:13-15) Oh well, if even Moses could say the right thing in the wrong place, there’s hope for the rest of us.

I really like that the persistent faith of blind Bartimaeus brought Jesus to a standstill in the middle of a road. No one else ever did that — only the shouts of a blind beggar from the side of the road. Jesus healed him and he threw off his beggar identity robe and followed Jesus. Bart had no way of knowing Jesus was on the way to Jerusalem to give up his life, and would never pass his way again. I’m sure that Bartimaeus had enough of sitting by the roadside, and like to think that for the rest of his life he was constantly on the move.

A standstill can be necessary in some places at the right times after you’ve been touched by Jesus. Just knowing that you need to move on from where you’ve been and to rid yourself of any old identity sign is a big thing! I’m keen on doing so and moving ahead in my life with my Lord Jesus.

“And so say all of us!”
