What “In My Name” Means

The Lord Jesus said: “For where two or three are gathered together IN MY NAME…” (Matthew 18:20) Not that he would come to them but that he would be present with them in his name.

Paul the Apostle: “…IN THE NAME of our LORD JESUS CHRIST, when you are gathered together…” (1 Corinthians 5:4) The name of Jesus is not a tag that we attach to our prayers, but rather his presence with us in our unity of purpose when gathered together to pray.

How can Jesus be present when we gather in his name? The same way Paul said he would be “present in spirit” with the church at Corinth when they gathered in the name of the Lord Jesus. Meaning, with them in the Spirit of God. Jesus being in heaven, seated at his Father’s right hand, but also anywhere on earth, at any time, in the Spirit of God.

So, our Lord Jesus is present in spirit among the members of all churches everywhere, which have gathered in His Name. The Spirit of God is not subject to Time, Space, or Matter; neither is our Lord Jesus! Nor is the spirit of a believer in Christ who is in the Spirit of God.

We might well function likewise in the Resurrection, in that we will be present with the Ruling Lord, and present also “in the Spirit” wherever God wills. Not omnipresent in ourselves, mind you, but in the omnipresent Spirit of God. Jesus can be present, with anyone in any place at any time. He did not have to leave heaven to show himself to Saul (later Paul) on the Damascus Road. He revealed himself spiritually in light “brighter than the noonday sun” — light so bright that it blinded him!

If you find it hard to get your mind around this, don’t even bother trying to work out things that are purely spiritual. Our minds still find it hard to grasp many things that are supernatural. So, better, surely, to wait until Jesus returns and the Resurrection takes place, after which our minds will be 100% spiritual and everything around us will be “as clear as crystal”!
