Thoughts on Father’s Day

It will be “Father’s Day” this coming Sunday in Australia. I’m looking forward to family members getting together as per usual. Our four children are now middle-aged and their own children have reached maturity.

Someone has said that we know we’re getting old when we feel like it’s “the morning after” after doing nothing the night before. When we’re exhausted after playing Monopoly. When we know all the answers but no one’s asking the questions. When we turn off the lights for economy rather than romance. When we don’t much mind when our wives go shopping, as long as we don’t have to go with them. When our knees buckle but our belt doesn’t. When we kneel down to tie up a shoelace and ask ourselves: Is there anything else I need to do while I’m down here? And when our grandchildren treat us as though we’re a flawed but lovable living treasure, having realised that we might soon be a buried one.

Enjoy yourself!
