The Spirit of Truth in You

Have you ever wondered why the Apostle John wrote that “you have no need for teachers”? After all, teachers are a ministry gift to the church (Ephesians 4:11). The subject of 1 John 2:27, however, is the anointing that rests on every believer, which, the inspired writer declares, guards sufficiently against false teachings.

If the origins of a Christian’s beliefs are the writings of theologians, instead of their own diligent study of the scriptures, their doctrinal understanding will come not from personally revealed truth, but commonly accepted tradition. The Church Fathers are often quoted as reliable sources, but some of them were dismissed by their contemporaries as heretics! (Check the profile of Tertullian, on Wikipedia, for example.)

I risk losing a few friends from time to time. I accept this, since the alternative is to compromise what I believe in seeking their acceptance. Those who “have no need that any should teach them” are instructed by “the anointing that abides” (rests) on them, according to John. I avoid posting my views on issues that readers are unlikely to examine personally. Many are ‘Bereans’ in name only.

Those who do not have the Spirit have to put their trust in the writings of Church Fathers and contemporary teachers. Well and good if the latter have derived their understanding from “searching the scriptures”. My calling from God is that of a teacher, and I am well aware of the biblical warning that teachers will be held more accountable.

But those who have accepted false doctrines that have their origin in man-made tradition will no doubt be asked by the Lord Jesus on That Day why they did not seek the guidance of the Spirit of Truth that was on them instead of just receive what they thought was truth but which had their origin in either church tradition or popular but writings that presented faulty scholarship.
