The Royal Law of Love

The treasuring and careful keeping of God’s commandments carried with it the promise that the days of the people of Israel and their offspring would be “multiplied…as the days of heaven upon the earth”.

These commandments are written on the heart (Deuteronomy 12:21). The expression “days of heaven on earth” is best understood in the light of Psalm 89:29, which reads: “His descendant I will also make to endure for ever, and his throne as the days of heaven.” Here, “days of heaven” is God’s promise to His “firstborn”, whom He would make “higher than the kings of the earth” This is a prophecy of the Messiah in particular and to those who believe in general.

The phrase “days of heaven” speaks of endless days of God’s blessing — a thing that we can look forward to when Jesus returns. And, since we are even now tasting “the powers of the age to come,” the promise applies to us daily. It is a powerful promise, one that we should claim — not because we are doing our very best to keep the Law but because Jesus met its every requirement.

The law that we keep is the Royal Law, which is the Law of Love. We do so because it’s natural for us — as natural as it was for our Lord Jesus. So, don’t work at it as though you were driving a vehicle that requires you to change gears manually, but instead an automatic vehicle with cruise control.
