Things that are invisible to the eye are no less real. Hundreds of years ago, physicians came to believe that the ills of the human body were due to four “humors”: Sanguine, Phlegmatic, Melancholy and Choleric. They concluded that these temperaments were due to the excess of certain body fluids, such as bile. In those days physicians bled sick people to lessen the effects of illnesses.
Louis Pasteur, the son of a humble tanner, was born in France in 1822, young Louis spent much of his time studying microbes through a microscope. Over time the young scientist proved that bacteria (plural), although invisible to the eye, were responsible for the change that takes place in milk, and other foodstuffs, especially when those foodstuffs were exposed to heat.
“Life begins only with life,” concluded Pasteur. He reasoned that the billions of microscopic germs around us change many of the things they touch. Pasteur’s discovery was a major medical breakthrough. It led to the prevention and control of terrible diseases, such as anthrax and rabies.
Pasteur’s name is today a household word worldwide, due to the Pasteurization of milk products. His discovery of invisible bacterium (the singular of bacteria) earned him world-renown and paved the way for another discovery of great importance: the prevention and control of harmful germs during surgical operations.
However, few people are aware that another invisible and deadly infection exists, one that although residual is transferable. It has infected the human race from the beginning of time, and threatens our very existence. Its name is Unbelief and it is an infection that does not discriminate, infecting people in homes and churches as well as bars and businesses. We need to expose its origin, its destructive effects, and how it can be eradicated.
