Chapter 27 of the book of Deuteronomy records that six of the twelve tribes of Israel stood on Mt Ebal and shouted “Amen!” to the curses that would come upon the children of Israel if they broke God’s Law. Chapter 28 records that the other six tribes stood on the other side of the valley that separated them and from Mt Gerizim shouted “Amen!” to the blessings that would come upon them if they kept the Law. (By my count, there are 14 verses of curses and 53 verses of blessings!)
“Today I set before you [Israel] life and death” warned Moses. “Choose life…” God was not impartial and urged them to choose life! No wonder the Samaritan woman claimed Mt Gerizim, the mountain of blessing! Who would choose to live under the shadow of a mountain of curses!
But Christians live on neither side, because we are under Grace, not under Law. So, stop trying to please God so you can stay on His good side and instead thank Him for His Grace to us in His Son! Jesus pleased his Father in everything he said and did and in so doing met every demand of the Law. Then because we were unable to meet them, Jesus died for us and justified us by rising from the dead (thus proving that he had satisfied the demands of Divine Justice). “There’s no law against love” because love fulfills the Law!
Suppose the authority that governs your area removed every speed sign, and that (with due care for others) you were able to drive without restriction. “Anxiety-free driving?” you might comment, “I’d like to see that!” The reality is that you won’t. But you can as a Christian in regard to the restrictions of God’ Law because the love of God in you prevents you from acting unlawfully.
Is that too big an ask? Not if you live the “above” life in Christ and not the “below” life in the old self. Not if God’s Love governs all that you say and do. When you don’t, confess it and God to forgive. But be aware that the new self within you did not sin because it cannot; it is incapable of sinning. So, declare the old self as having been buried in baptism, the new self as being alive in Christ, and then let God’s Love govern you!
