I’m a Christian first and foremost. I do accept the term Pentecostal because it describes one who has received the baptism in (or with) the Holy Spirit subsequent to receiving Jesus as Lord and Saviour. Not only was that my experience and is of most believers who have received the Gift, but there’s the fact that it is also clearly scriptural.
The Spirit of God bears witness with us that we are “born of God”; i.e. “born again” or “born from above” but it is the ascended and glorified Lord Jesus who baptizes in the Holy Spirit (1 John 5:6; Acts 2:33). He did so then, did so thereafter, and does so still to this day.
I have thought of myself more as a Cornelian than a Pentecostal at times because the Acts 2:1-4 event relates to the Feast of Pentecost — a strictly Jewish event. In addition, the tongues that appeared as flames on the heads of believers was unique to a particular Day of Pentecost and the tongues spoken on the Day of Pentecost were identified by visitors as sixteen languages then spoken in nations from which they had come, located around the Mediterranean Sea.
The Acts chapter 10 outpouring in the House of Cornelius featured unknown languages; however, nothing is recorded of them being understood by those present, or that they were then interpreted.
This is not an argument from silence; however, it is reasonable to
conclude that the significance of the Acts 2:4 event was that the Feast was an annual event on the Jewish calendar, and also that it was “once only” since it was not repeated the following year in Jerusalem and has not been since.
Also, there’s the fact that none of those on whom the Spirit fell — “as on us at the beginning” were Jews (Acts 11:15). This outpouring relates more to outpourings around the globe since then, especially since the beginning of the 20th century.
I am not saying we ought to call ourselves Cornelians but am just making a point. However, if we are looking for a scriptural template that accords more with the apostle Paul’s teaching in 1 Corinthians, chapter 14, then I see Acts 10:44-46 as a better fit than Acts 2:4-12.
