Paradoxical or Adaptable?

We can understand the Lamb/Lion aspects of Jesus: i.e. that as the Lamb of God he died willingly, and that as the Lion of Judah he roars regally. This is not a contradiction or a paradox but rather an adeptness to adjust to different situations and the challenges — read opportunities — they presented.

We understand less, perhaps, the Dove/Eagle aspects of the Holy Spirit: that the gentle bird that descended on Jesus at his baptism and thereafter empowered him to soar like the eagle in ministry (Isaiah 40:31). The Lord Jesus was more than a match for anyone or anything, whether dressing down Pharisees in Jerusalem (Matthew, chapter 23) or expelling thousands of demons from the possessed Legion on the non-Jewish side of Galilee. (There would have been no pigs on the Jewish side for the panic-stricken demons to enter.)

Likewise, every Christian is a paradox to those who are without understanding in this matter. Offend or even harm a believer in Jesus whose role is to suffer as Christ did, and he or she will bear it to identify with Jesus. But do so when the anointing is on a believer who is doing the Lord’s work and — watch out! The Lamb nature is silent. The Lion roars! The eagle swoops!

I believe we will see this apparent paradox, this instant change, take place frequently in the coming days. The mind of Christ in our attitude and the power of the Spirit of God in our actions. Maybe less a paradox than the ability to adapt to situations and circumstances.

Excellence will be seen not only in the things we do but also in the way we do things. Think Adept, Adopt, Adapt and add “-ability” to whichever.
