Memorable Moments in Ministry (1)

A millionaire Aussie expat from LA once slept overnight in our home in Australia and the next morning gave me $18,000 toward our work in the Philippines. Not in response to any suggestion or request from me but prompted in his heart by the Holy Spirit. “A lot of people give churches money to help someone else do God’s work, but you are doing the work yourself,” he said.

The millionaire’s name was Alex Clarke and later he flew with his son Dean from LA to the Philippines via Japan to observe what we were doing in Manila and beyond. Alex witnessed the setting free of a tribal chief who had come down from Mt. Pinatubo to the mission in Manila to be set free from spiritual bondage.

The power of the Spirit of God had been so strong that Alex came to me after the chief was set free and said: “I have seen God do many things, but nothing as powerful as I have seen here tonight — if it was God!”

Alex knew that it was God who had done it, of course, but he was amazed: the chief’s deliverance had been spectacular, due to the startling effect of God’s power on him!

Alex Clark has since been with Jesus his Lord for many years, but his loud, happy laugh, his hospitality toward my wife Lorraine, and I and our good friend Alan Dean at his home during stopovers at his home north of LA (not to mention his years as a famous imitator of Elvis Presley) make Alex memorable.

The change made by Jesus in the native chief was something to behold — as was the look on Alex’s face! The entire incident, now long ago, is to me a Memorable Moment in Ministry!
