It’s Not Brain Surgery

If your minister says it might not be God’s will to heal you, ask for a second opinion from your doctor, who knows that the body will not only resist invasive external infections but also recover itself from internal problems. He or she will do everything possible to save your life because “Do No Harm” is the maxim of every physician.

“If it is God’s will” is akin to paramedics saying, “We’ll get you quickly to the nearest hospital, and if you are still alive when we arrive conclude that you were meant to live.”

The whiplashes that flayed the back of Jesus were God’s provision for our physical healing. The apostles Paul and Peter are clear on this (I Corinthians 11:23-31 & 1 Peter 2:24). How many Christians have suffered and died as a result of indecisive ministers and wrong teaching?

Sure, there are charlatans who seek to profit from those who have been advised by doctors that nothing more can be done for them and so are desperate. But who would throw away $50 notes after hearing that some counterfeit notes are in circulation? If questioned whether all who are prayed for are healed, my reply is Are all who’ve had the best of medical help possible healed? Our default setting is not “Is it God’s will to heal me?” but Exodus 15:26 — “I AM the LORD who heals you.”

The Jewish Bible (our Old Testament) is soundly on the side of physical cleanliness and the importance of proper food preparation. Priests carefully examined lepers to assess whether they were fully recovered and ready to reenter society. Jesus healed ten lepers and then sent them to the temple priests to confirm that they were in fact, healed completely.

It’s foolish to link medical help to unbelief. Some evangelists in the 1950s did that but were extreme because of the opposition they encountered from physicians. They pushed against ignorance and opposition and broke through it with undeniable miracles!

View some of the miracles that God did for the sick and injured through the ministry of Oral Roberts. I screened his films wherever I could in the 1960s. (We less well-known ministers have also seen many sick and injured people healed after praying for them.)

Who gave the world medical science — Satan? Of course not! “The truth is not in him.” Jesus said: “The thief comes only to steal, kill, and to destroy; but I have come that they might have life, and that have it more abundantly.” Until it overflows! (John 10:10) More “wellness” than we can contain!

Divine Healing is nowhere near as complex as brain surgery! (That said, some who oppose it could do with some mind renewal.) On the whole, physicians do their best, and the body does the rest.

Your physician is trained to diagnose and to treat medical problems, but please don’t make God your last resort. In the face of impossibilities of every kind, Jesus prescribes faith. I suggest that you insert your doctor’s diagnosis into your New Testament next to Mark 11:20-23, and then place it under your pillow, so you can sleep on that promise and many other texts that promise healing.
