Absorb these three phrases in 1 John 4:17, each consisting of three words: “As he is / so are we / in this world.” The first and second phrases would be easier to grasp if John had applied them to the state of the believer in heaven — but “in this world”? In this dirty, mean, sin-sick, greedy world? Yes.
Not just “in this world” as our Lord Jesus was during his time on earth but as he now is in Heaven and we are in him! Don’t try to get your mind around this verse, which is one of the most profound in John’s letters. Just let the reality of it drop into your heart and refresh it, as the morning dew distills onto and refreshes the tender grass.
Some things in life are better left unsaid, and other things are best said and then left for the time when we are mature enough to receive them.
