God Heard in Silence

Times have changed: life has speeded up, leaving little rest from the smashing, flashing, and crashing noises that intrude from radio, television, mobile ‘phones, and handheld devices.

The “children of Israel” (the descendants of the renamed Jacob) looked forward to the “rest” that awaited them in the Promised Land. But God did not allow that generation to enter into that rest because of their unbelief The NT book of Hebrews informs us that real “rest” only comes after we give up trying to ‘get into God’s Good Books’ by our own ‘do good’ efforts, which are aimed at securing self-earned righteousness. Dead works result in dead religion, but trust in the finished work of Jesus on the Cross results in everlasting life.

Many of the Psalms end with “Selah”, which means “Pause and consider.” How about we press the Pause on the remote or the handheld? Or even better, the Off button. All sight and sound will then vanish, leaving a silence in which God can speak significant things

Intrusive video and noisy audio on handheld devices that cease suddenly can leave sighs of relief… and a new appreciation for the silence as we once knew — a silence so new to the ear that in it we would be able to hear the voice of God as clearly as we did when we were first saved.

The ultimate sound of silence.
