“Neither shall any plague come near your dwelling.” (Psalm 91:10) Moses spoke of the LORD as his “refuge” and encouraged the people of Israel to “dwell” in Him; to make “the secret place of the Most High” their habitation. Solomon built God a temple. The Babylonians destroyed it. The people rebuilt it. Herod improved its appearance.
When Jesus came, he referred to his body as “this temple” but his enemies combined to “destroy” it. Three days after they did, God raised it up and Jesus ascended into heaven, visibly. Fifty days after being crucified, Jesus baptized his waiting disciples in the Holy Spirit, and they became God’s temple. In a personal, singular sense, the body of every Christian is the temple of the Holy Spirit, so we should treat it accordingly.
Today “the secret place of the Most High” is the holy dwelling-place of God composed of all who believe in Jesus Christ, and as such, it is beyond the ability of any plague to come near it, much less destroy it. The Most High God dwells in us by His Spirit and we in Him. Everyone who believes in Jesus and is baptised in water is a member of His Church, a body of believers through which the life of Jesus is displayed to the world. Jesus is “the Saviour of the body” (Ephesians 5:23) and protects it as a caring husband does his beloved wife.
Most religions see life beyond the grave as purely spiritual and disdain the physical body as unworthy of eternal life, but God has promised to not only raise it up but also immortalize it! I have come to know my body fairly well after having lived in it for almost 85 years. It is not what it was in my younger days but when Resurrected at the return of Jesus Christ, it will become immortal. Eternity has already begun spiritually in me and as it has in all who have placed their trust in Jesus Christ!
Psalm 91:1 will then be more fact than promise. A reality accomplished by the living Lord Jesus and is described in 1 John 5:20, which I urge all to read and reread until the Spirit of God reveals the amazing truth it contains. I grasped this truth long ago and by God’s grace I “reign in life” through the power of it while waiting for a mortal body that will enable me to transit from here to eternity!
