Freedom or Bondage? Freedom, without a Doubt!

Those well-meaning people who would like to do away with the Monarchy might not realize that it came to us from the Bible. It was not God’s choice, which was a theocracy: God’s direct rule over His people. But when His people asked for a strong king to rule over them, God gave them what they wanted — a kingdom ruled over by a man who was physically “head and shoulders” over everyone else (1 Samuel 9:2).

Almighty God, who gives kings and queens, also removes them — at times with short notice. Divine Rule will return, but until it does, some monarchs will bless us; others will not. (The Bible tells us of an unloved king whose epitaph read: “He departed without being desired.”)

Some monarchs endear themselves to those over whom they rule, and some just don’t. Around the globe, tears were shed by those who had not realized the depth of their respect and affection for the late Queen Elizabeth II. Her Majesty was an iconic, much beloved, figure in life and remains so in death.

The very idea of replacing monarchs with politically appointed figureheads goes against the long-accepted principle of immediate and understood transition, seen in the comma in the proclamation — “The King is dead, long live the King!” This form of transmission of Power predates less effective republican forms by a thousand years.
