Cousin Jack and His Rather Splendid Master

Australians in the main regard themselves as equal to anyone else in society; not because they were born into families of note, but rather because they respect those who make their way to the top through wise investments, sales savvy, technical brilliance, or simply hard work.

Christians, too, are of equal good standing with God through Jesus Christ, which is why Paul the apostle writes of there being no difference between master and servant, bond and free, rich and poor. Paul was well aware of the distinctions that existed in Roman society.

But these did not, and do not, exist in the New Creation that God brought into being through the death and resurrection of Jesus, and his ascension to the throne of his Father in Heaven. It is said that death is “the great equalizer”, and there can be no doubt of that!

However, the blessed assurance that comes from knowing that all believers are a “one new creation” in Jesus Christ is a far greater one since it unites them in one spiritual body, the Church! (“One” appears seven times in Ephesians 4:4-6 and 20 times in the epistle.).

“Jack” can and should be “as his Master” and even do “greater works” in his Name according to John 14:12. This is because Jesus went to his Father, and sent the Holy Spirit, which multiplied his ministry on earth; but he cannot now nor ever will be greater than his glorified Master.

Cornish workers were known on the Australian goldfields as “Cousin Jacks” — likely because of the close relationship they shared with one another, but if they had ever encountered the risen Lord Jesus on the minefields, they would have doffed their caps, touched their forelocks, and greeted him as “Guv” (short for Governor).

I was once stopped by a foreman in charge of a gang of road workers in Cornwall some years ago — no doubt due to my flash rental car and suit and tie. He addressed me respectfully, saying: “The roadworks will not keep you long, Guv.” It was a first (and likely a last) for yours truly. “A bit of alright”, as they might say down in Kornal. It certainly made my day!

To God be the glory and also to our splendid Lord Jesus, the greatest of all Guvs!
