God is a Spirit who has revealed himself in Creation (Romans 1:20). Jesus said, “A spirit has neither flesh nor bones…” So, to become visible to His creation, God formed Man from the dust of the earth, and made him in His own image and likeness. He breathed life into this form, and he became “a living soul” (being}.
God gave Adam, the “son of God’, dominion over everything in the air, on land, and in the sea. Of all creatures, Adam alone was created in God’s image, and none other was his equal.
Adam was a “son of God” by natural creation (Luke 3:38). So, every descendant of Adam and Eve is not a creation but a reproduction. Jesus was God’s only-begotten Son, and his Heavenly Father recognized him as such by publicly declaring that He was “well-pleased” with him. God later declared Jesus to be “the Son of God with power” by raising him from the dead.
The image of God ruined by the first Adam was replaced by the last Adam, the perfect Jesus (1 Corinthians 15:45). The “new creation” in Christ is the recreated image of the invisible God in humanity. All other manmade images of God on earth are idols. Jesus is “the firstborn of every creature”, “the firstborn among many brethren”, and “the beginning of God’s [new] creation” (Colossians 1:15; Revelation 3:14).
God said, when speaking of the Angel of His Presence, “My Name is in him”, and that Angel said on another occasion, “My name is Secret”. But only Jesus, who was not an angel but the Son of God, could say, “I have revealed your Name to them”! God’s “Name” is His identity. He is the Father of all who believe in, rely on, and entrust themselves to His only-begotten Son. What an awesome God! What a unique Saviour! What a privilege it is to know both Father and Son!
