The Unique Lord Jesus!

Understanding the nature of Jesus helps us to understand our own nature, as God’s children. We read in 2 Peter 1:4 that through God’s promises we are made “partakers of the divine nature” — the nature of the Son of God being that of his Father, and also that of the sons of God.

Romans 8:29 and Hebrews 2:11-13 tell us that Jesus was “the firstborn among many”. As such, he is our Elder Brother. In Israel, the firstborn son inherited a double portion, and his rights and responsibilities were higher than those of later born sons. He received both the birthright and the blessing. (Read Genesis, chapter 27.) Elisha’s request for Elijah’s mantle and “a double portion” of his anointing was based on him being the prophet Elijah’s spiritual son — not merely one of the many “sons of the prophets” (2 Kings 2:7)

“What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey him?” (Mark 4:41) Jesus turned water into wine, stilled a wild storm with words, forgave sinners, and walked on water. These were standout miracles, which I consider superior to the miracle “works” of the kind that Jesus said later-born sons would do (John 14:12).

They were miracles unique to the Firstborn. We can and do delight in being children of God and siblings of Jesus, but we are not equal. Our Lord’s virgin birth makes him unique! Jesus is his Father’s Son in a way that makes him special. We can, however, rejoice in our privileged relationship with this Firstborn among many sons.
