President Trump has described himself as “Chosen” — likely the result of him being called such by Christian leaders in the USA. In Isaiah 44:28 and 45:1-5, Cyrus is called (among other things) “My shepherd” and “(My) anointed”. Anointed meaning chosen. Cyrus was a demagogue and also a heathen, yet God used him to allow the Jews to return to Jerusalem from Babylon.
George Bernard Shaw said that to bring about change, radicals were needed, because non-radicals tend to accept things as they are. Hence Boris Johnston, the radical PM of the UK during the passing of BREXIT.
Christians see the overruling hand of God in world affairs. That those who do not see this and so fear radical leaders such as US President Trump is natural. Generals Patton, Macarthur, and Montgomery were egotists — Patton quite weird — yet they proved essential to the winning of World War 2.
Many people are praying for President Trump, and see in him much to thank God for. I am one of them. Time will tell, and I suggest that Trump will prove successful, in spite of his ruthlessness in business (or because of it), and in behaviour more often seen and applauded in the behaviour of the stars of stage and screen.
God is in control, however bizarre the world of politics may become. Satan does not own this world, he owns only its system, its chaotic and ungodly way of doing things. Followers of Jesus Christ are God’s chosen people, and as such are seen as enemies in much the way Maxwell Smart was seen by the criminal group Kaos as an implacable enemy.
I would like to think that the Lord’s people have none of Maxwell Smart’s idiosyncrasies, but I’m not quite sure. After all, my adult grandchildren (who have probably not viewed any of Maxwell Smart’s escapades) tend to view me at times as “a bit over the top”. I regard this as something of a badge of honour. Two pastors in the UK courteously invited me not to preach in their churches again, due to unexpected outpourings of the Holy Spirit that placed their congregations in a horizontal position on the floor.
Still, the Acts, chapter 2 visitation on the Day of Pentecost seemed bizarre to the citizens of Jerusalem, as I recall. Not an excuse, just a thought. I look forward with hope to seeing Donald Trump, God’s Chosen, under the power of God in the Oval Office.
