The robe Jesus wore was seamless, and so was too valuable for the Roman soldiers at the cross to divide, so they gambled for it. A seam in the garment would have enabled the soldiers to tear it in two along the seam.
In military terms, a “seam” is a weakness in a line of defence. An opened seam in the line will allow the enemy to break through. Figuratively speaking, a seam can be a character fault or habitual flaw that opens up easily, like a tear in the back seat of trousers — embarrassing!
If there’s a fault, a weakness, a flaw, it will likely open up along a seam. The Bible informs us that every man knows “the plague of his own heart” — the thing that troubles him most, his weakest point.
Jesus Christ had no weak point. He was flawless. His divine nature was seamlessly ‘woven’ into his humanity and his humanity into his divinity. Satan tried to find a weak point but could not. Jesus said: “The prince of this world comes, and finds nothing in me.” Pilate examined him and said three times, “I find no fault in this man.” Those who believe in Jesus Christ share the same divine nature, which makes us flawless in the sight of God (our ongoing sanctification by the Holy Spirit changes us in the sight of others).
Our weakest point as believers is our inability or unwillingness to accept that God sees us as seamless in His Son after we are “born from above”. This allows those who in the past knew our weak points to claim that we’re not perfect. In their eyes, that may be true, but not in God’s eyes.
So why permit people to tear you apart — you are far too valuable for that! And as for those who search for a weak seam in our new nature, the best advice to them is not to bet on finding one!
